Flu Shot Only 59% Effective; Still Pushed Due to Fear Mongering?Posted: October 27, 2011

Does it truly make sense to buy into the fear mongering used to influence the opinions of the average American citizen regarding the flu?
Most of the hype heard in most major news outlets seems to be about H1N1…the so-called “swine flu.”
The name is really not accurate though since the majority of H1N1 is not transmitted from pigs to humans but rather from humans to humans.
According to the CDC, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended that the Northern Hemisphere’s 2011–2012 seasonal influenza vaccine contain the following three vaccine viruses:
- an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like virus;
- an A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2)-like virus; and
- a B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus.
These are the same viruses that were selected for the Northern Hemisphere for the 2010-2011 influenza vaccine.
However, it has just come out in a study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases on Tuesday, October 25th that the flu shot is only effective in 59% of those who are vaccinated. Moreover, the vaccine has unconfirmed links to Gillian Barre Syndrome, which is a serious disorder that occurs when the body’s defense (immune) system mistakenly attacks part of the nervous system.
Since December 1976 when the public health campaign against H1N1 Swine Flu ended due to serious setbacks in its program amid public panic over adverse events associated with the vaccination itself, there has been only one death associated with H1N1 in the United States. This one case was indeed, one of the few times where H1N1 was actually passed from a pig to a human being.
Preventing yourself from catching the flu can largely be done through making sure to wash your hands thoroughly each and every time you leave the house and come back, keeping your hands away from your mouth, nose and eyes, and through disinfecting countertop surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom.
(You may also wish to keep yourself from playing with sick pigs.)
While I personally think that 59% protection against the flu is better than no protection, I also think that the massive push by health officials and the government to get a flu shot is due more to the influence of the pharmaceutical companies that develop the flu vaccine, than it is to the actual dangers posed by H1N1.
Someone is getting very, very rich here….
